Badger Bimmer's Board Meeting Minutes October 14, 1999
Attendance: Mustafa Emir (president), Mike Stello (treasurer), Mary Medo (secretary), Clarence Behrend (editor), Matt Buckau (board member), Dave Herr (board member), Larry Boyer (board member), Brad Radcliffe, Joe Conway, Greg Smith, Les Welenta, and Paul Szedziewski.
President Mustafa called the meeting to order at 7:15. We had a small, but lively group at Mini's on Green Bay Avenue in Milwaukee.
Minutes: approved
Treasurer's Report: approved. The balance in the checking account is $48,029. (Hmmm...that's a lot. How can we use some of it to benefit others and give some back to our members? Stay tuned.)
Membership: (Mustafa) Membership this month is 662. Last month we had 647 members. A year ago our members numbered 565.
OLD BUSINESS
IMAX - Super Speedway Saturday, November 6, 1999, 3:30 show (Mustafa)
We will pay for the show (about $1270) and get the tickets in advance. Members and their guests can purchase tickets for $5, well below the regular ticket price, and are asked to bring two pounds of nonperishable food. Money and food will be donated to charitable groups as previously announced. However, we will not be able to park our cars on the walk outside the museum because the remodeling of the front entrance is still in progress.
The theater holds 275, but attendance at out events generally ranges from 40 to 75 people. Since we will have about 200 tickets not sold to members and guests, we will donate tickets to organizations that serve children. Brad, Dave, Mustafa, Paul, and Mary will offer tickets to groups such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls' Club, Mentors of Children with Special Needs, and public schools. We will also ask Darcy to offer tickets to the private school where she works. We will ask the adult sponsor in each organization to be sure that transportation for the children is provided and that each child is asked to bring two items of nonperishable food.
Holiday Party Saturday, January 15, 2000, Astor Hotel, 6:30 (Mary)
Music at the party will be provided by the Dan Dance Trio a VERY good group. Mustafa will head up the 'goodie getters,' and Matt and Brad will help. The guys will contact various vendors, dealers, and anyone else they can think of to collect a nice bunch of merchandise that will be given away to members who attend the Holiday Party. We will also be giving away one free entry to each of our driving events next year. Now that's a good deal!
Here's a better deal The dinner and Hors D'oeuvres will cost about $30 per person. Then there's the cost of beverages, room rent, and the band. Boy, that could come to quite a bit. BUT since we have a nice fat treasury, we're charging a mere $18 per member and guests. It's the Club's way of saying "Thanks" to active members for their participation, interest, and support. It's our way of inviting less active members and NEW MEMBERS to come join us. We're a bunch of regular, down-to-earth people and we're pretty easy to get along with. We want to meet new members! So be there, okay? (Look for more details elsewhere in the newsletter.)
OctoberFAST October 15-17, 1999
Hey, that's tomorrow! Everything's organized and ready to go. We still need one volunteer for clean tech. Joe Conway will help when he's not driving.
Bucks Game February 19, 2000 (Dave Herr)
Dave will reserve a sky box for the game. Each box accommodates 20 people. If there are more people interested, we may be able to get two adjoining sky boxes.
Blackhawk (Mary)
We are able to refund the instructors fees and will send checks right after OctoberFAST.
NEW BUSINESS
Editor's report from the Editor's Conference in Austin (Clarence Behrend)
Clarence picked up a lot of information and shared several tidbits with us, but first he thanked the Club for giving him free admission to driving schools and other Club events.
* National provides a form we can submit to request matching charity funds. (The Board decided to submit a request for $28000 to match the amount we raised for the Rainbow Hospice last May when we held Treffpunkt Jefferson, our German Car Show.)
* Some chapters have hot lines.
* Some chapters send a welcome letter to new members and include car care tips and a $10 coupon good toward any chapter event.
* If we want to have more advertising in our newsletter, we would need one person to serve as an advertising committee chair.
* One-time rental of mailing lists is permissible. (We don't want to do this.)
* Here's an idea to encourage member participation:
* Give points for attending meetings, participating in activities, submitting items to the newsletter.
* Double the points for those who help or organize an event.
* For every 50 points, give the member one raffle ticket
* Each Board member is allowed one raffle ticket.
* Hold a drawing and award the winner a round trip to Octoberfest.
* Send postcards or flyers to remind/inform members of up-coming events.
* Better software could improve the quality of the newsletter. (The Board authorized Clarence to research software options and to get prices.)
The Immer
Joe Conway volunteered to proofread the newsletter before it goes to press.
Webmaster (Matt Buckau)
Greg Smith spends many hours keeping our website up-to-date and looking great, and he does it at no cost to the Club. The Board passed a motion to give Greg the same benefit recently granted to the editor, i.e. one free entry/admission to all Club events.
Board members membership fee (Mary)
The question of membership fee reimbursement for Board members was raised. The decision was made that any Board member who wants to be reimbursed simply needs to tell Mike and he will issue a check. There will be no blanket reimbursement.
Club Merchandise (Mary)
Now that we have a nifty, new logo, how about having it printed, stamped, or embroidered on some equally nifty things? Here are some suggestions. Darcy and Mary will contact suppliers and get prices.
* Window stickers - static, adhesive, or decal.
* Grille badges, embroidered patches, key fobs, bottle openers
* Polo shirts, b-ball caps, t-shirts
* Coffee mugs, wine glasses, beer mugs
Watertown's Riverfest (Brad Radcliffe)
On the first weekend in August, Watertown hold a Riverfest and is interested in having our Club hold a car show. We really weren't ready to discuss this, so we'll most likely bring it up again at a later date.
Michigan Car Ferry (Paul Szedziewski)
The Car Ferry offers a cruise beginning in early May. For $30, anyone can board the ferry and enjoy a three-hour shoreline tour. We had a good time on the Edelweiss cruise, so why not this one? Let's think about it! Could be fun.
A Lock Maker (Matt Buckau)
A company called Huff's manufactures locks for BMWs and many other German cars. Tours of the facility are available and we might consider linking a tour with another event.
Robert A. Zimmerman (Les Welenta)
Bob Zimmerman, the founder of the Club in 1972, recently passed away. The Board will donate $100 to the American Heart Association in Bob's memory.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:50
